Evaluation

I have found this project very hard to get into, I think this is because there was so much choice in the brief. I originally wanted to do the 'Thats rubbish' project, by using letters found in wood grain but when i re read the brief, that didn't exactly come under found rubbish, so i ended up choosing a 3D quote.

My quote was 'Don't bury your head in the sand' i chose this quote use it as inspiration to how i was feeling for this bit of the course, with letting things get to me and burying my head in the sand.

I originally wanted to use magic sand to create my font, but i couldn't find it in any toy shops, so i ordered some online but unfortunately it came a bit to late as i wouldn't be able to get my pictures processed in time for the deadline.

I think if i where to do this project again i would defiantly plan my time more effectively- such as order the sand earlier on so i could include it within my project. I would of also taken a printed out font with me to place as a type guide rather then doing it by hand. I think i should of not been afraid to talk to the tutors about my work, as they could of helped with motivation and planning of my ideas.

I started off by drawing into the sand with a rock to create the outline of the quote.

I then built up the outlines to make the quote look more 3D.

• Seeing as im using the quote 'Don't bury your head in the sand' the obvious choice was to use sand
• Magic sand (sand that repels the water)- found this item hard to come across as most shops had run out of it, so wasn't able to use it in the end.

Vladimir Koncar

I came across Valdimir when looking on google for hand made typefaces. His work was really interesting and the typefaces he had created work really well. I would like to do something like this for my type work, but make them more 3-D.

Information about artist:

I am a 31-year-old visual artist and designer born in a little town called Bjelovar in Croatia. Currently I live in Zagreb where I work as an artistic dictator, information architect and designer of multidisciplinary design studio Revolucija (revolucija.hr), which I founded 6 years ago with two of my friends.

The creative affinities I have are quite different, so besides graphic design and web design that are my intensive daily work, I also take photos, make short experimental films, create illustrations and play with typography.

My work is not only of aesthetic nature but through it I try to send a message and work on different levels. The most important thing is actually the distinction of projects I take part of, and that allows me to continually play in different domains and enjoy the process of creation.

Stefan Sagmeister

A well-known Graphic Designer, who likes to break the boundaries with experimenting with different type. He has scratched into his own skin to create a poster for one of his art shows. He also creates type and places it within its environment. Such as with his ‘good’ he has made this out of twigs and placed it into a tree.

stefan sagmeister born in 1962, bregenz, austria. stefan sagmeister studied graphic design at the university of applied arts in vienna. in 1987 he moved to new york to attended pratt institute on a fulbright scholarship. he then returned to austria in 1990 for community service as an alternative to obligatory military conscription. at the age 29, he attained a job with leo burnett hong kong. in 1993 he returned to new york to work for the hungarian graphic designer tibor kalman at M&Co. when the studio closed the same year, sagmeister opened his own office ‘sagmeister inc’. in 1994 he was nominated for a grammy award for his album cover - 'h. p. zinker mountains of madness’. in the following years he designed album packaging for artists such as david byrne, lou reed and the rolling stones. in 1996 sagmeister began developed posters for AIGA -american institue of graphic arts- he took a ‘year out’ in 1999, closing his studio to commercial work and concentrating on his own experimental projects. in 2001 released the book ‘made you look (another self-indulgent design monograph)’. in 2005 he won a grammy award as art director of the 'once in a lifetime’ talking heads boxed set packaging. currently among many projects sagmeister continues his work on ‘20 things in my life I have learned so far.’ a series of typographic pieces inspired by the work of his grandfather that he began in 2004.

Some words

with the neon alphabet, 'every word unmade' i was thinking about a kind
of unmaking of language. as if you could make every word, or story imaginable,
from these 26 letters. all the potential is there, but none of the words.
the fragile wobberly letters, a byproduce of incrementally, inexpertly bending
the glass-then the electrical circuit pumping the gas through, make it like
one big, constant stutter...words about to be made or unmade. because i have
no practical experience of working with glass, the neon is kindof crappily made.
the final piece reflects the struggle to control the medium, the language,
if you like, that in turn reflects the struggle to define the meaning.
